News Update for 11/19/18

The Avon Park city council will meet in special session this evening as newly-elected council members chart a new course for the City of Charm.
Among other things, they will consider an interim legal council for the board and look at the city manager hiring process. Both of those positions were vacated last week. A number of local residents already have expressed interest in the city manager’s post.

Accidents occurred all over the county last night and they happened all about the same time. Around 8:PM, three vehicles came together on Highway 27 in front of River Greens – reportedly, traffic was slowed but there were no serious injuries.
About a half hour later, two people had to be airlifted out when two cars collided on Arbuckle Creek Road near the landfill.
A motorcycle went out of control and crashed near the intersection of Highway 27 and Lake Francis drive just north of Lake Placid about 10:30 last night. One person was transported from that one.
The Florida Highway patrol has not released any names or other details on the mishaps.

Saturday evening Highlands Lakes volunteer firefighters and Highlands County EMS units responded to a vehicle accident on Stryker Road.
A vehicle left the roadway, traveled approximately 50 yards into a field, then plunged into a canal. The driver was trapped inside and had to be extricated.
The victim was flown to a local trauma center by the Aeromed II air ambulance.

Summer’s over and officials of the Florida forest Service warn we are now headed into the wildfire season, and already there has been a brush fire. Forestry crews and the Highlands County fire/Rescue quelled a 30-acre blaze off State Road 70 just east of the Brighton cut-off.
According to reports a vehicle driving along a canal bank there had mechanical issues and ignited the tall grass – which spread rapidly. There were no injuries and no structures were damaged or threatened.
