News Update for 7/10/18

It will be another night session for Highlands County Commissioners this evening, as they pick up a public hearing on a proposed fire assessment for the county. The monies would be used to begin a professional fire service here.
At a session two weeks ago, commissioners heard a long line of people telling them such a levy would cost too much – including draconian raises on churches and some businesses.
Tonight’s meeting will feature scenarios on what it would cost – and what the effect would be – if they would institute the assessment at 50-60-70-or 80 percent of the proposed levels. The meeting will commence at 5:30 in the commission chambers.

A proposed memorial to war dogs has tentatively been set for the grounds of the Avon Park Community Center. Council member Doris Smith objected to the site, saying it should go on the mall.
Organizers explained it was moved from the mall due to Florida Department of Transportation regulations.
Council members gave tentative approval to the project pending the resolution of liability issues and an engineering review. Smith voted against the move.
