News Update for 7/17/18]

It’s that time of year again, when Highlands County Commissioner Don Elwell holds one of his semi-annual town hall meetings. Elwell usually gives a state of the county address and has county staff on hand to help answer questions from citizens.
Tonight, other county commissioners will be there as well, and will transform the session into a budget presentation. At last report, it was revealed that the county could be as much as eight million dollars in the hole.
Staff has recommended raising the milage rate to help offset the shortfall.
Tonight’s meeting will get underway at the South Florida State College Community Center commencing at 6pm.

Area caladium growers will have a couple of opportunities to show their wares in the coming weeks. First, the annual Caladium Festival will be held in Lake Placid July 27-29 with arts, crafts music and bus tours of the Caladium fields.
Then in August, Bok Tower Gardens will celebrate “I Love Caladium Month,” featuring a caladium trail with 20 different varietals of the plant. That month-long observance also will feature a series of plant education seminars.
Caladiums for that event come from growers in Lake Placid, Avon Park and Lakeland.
