A Highlands County man is under arrest following a New Year’s Eve investigation involving an alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl. Sheriff’s deputies say a 41-year-old suspect was taken into custody after the victim reported a long-term, non-consensual sexual relationship and a violent incident that prevented her from leaving the residence. Investigators say the suspect was aware of the victim’s age and was already on felony probation at the time. He now faces multiple charges, including sexual assault and violation of probation.
The Avon Park City Council will begin interviews for the city manager position on January 10th, starting at 9 a.m. at City Hall. Six candidates are scheduled for hour-long interviews, including current interim city manager Jason Atkinson. After interviews, council members will score applicants, with discussion expected at the January 12th council meeting. The position opened following the resignation of former City Manager Dr. Danielle Kelly last fall.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a 24-year-old man accused of carjacking an Uber driver at gunpoint. Deputies say the suspect forced the driver to travel from Tampa to Dundee early Saturday morning, making a stop along the way before letting the victim go. An arrest warrant has been issued on charges including armed kidnapping and aggravated assault, and the suspect is considered armed and dangerous.
