South Florida State College is celebrating “100 Years at the 100 Building” this Saturday, October 18th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the SFSC Lake Placid Center. The free, family-friendly event honors a century of learning at the historic 100 Building — once the original Lake Placid School. Visitors can enjoy tours, historical exhibits, games, face painting, live comedy from Toby’s Clown School, door prizes, and complimentary hot dogs while supplies last. Highlands County residents can safely dispose of old chemicals and electronics at the next Household Hazardous Waste and E-waste Collection Event, happening Saturday, November 8th, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 6000 Skipper Road in Sebring. The county will accept items like paint, oil, batteries, pesticides, computers, TVs, and cell phones — all in unlimited quantities. A Lake Wales burglary case was solved within hours — thanks to a sharp-eyed citizen and a paper trail at a scrap yard. Polk County deputies say 41-year-old Charles Richard Harmon II stole an industrial range worth $2,500 from a local business on October 14th. A witness spotted the range on a trailer behind a white SUV, leading detectives to a nearby scrap yard where Harmon had sold it. He was arrested that night on Dogyard Road and charged with Burglary, Grand Theft, Dealing in Stolen Property, and Providing False Information to a Pawnbroker.
There’s a case of rabies in Polk County. The sheriff’s office announced yesterday a stray cat tested positive for rabies Sunday. It’s the county’s first rabies case this year, and Sheriff Grady Judd says one is one too many. He advises everyone to stay alert and avoid contact with stray or wild animals acting strangely.
