A man living in a home with a sign that read “Absolutely no drugs allowed on the premises” is now behind bars after deputies say they found plenty inside. The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the DEA, arrested 76-year-old John Wesley Moss after serving a search warrant at his home on South Delaney Avenue in Avon Park. Detectives say they discovered cocaine, oxycodone, meth, marijuana, cash, and firearms during the search. Moss now faces multiple charges, including armed trafficking and possession by a convicted felon. He’s now calling the Highlands County Jail home.

A community effort to fight prescription drug misuse is happening this weekend. HCA Florida Highlands Hospital is teaming up with the Sebring Police Department this Saturday, October 25th, for “Crush the Crisis” — Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3600 South Highlands Avenue in Sebring. You can drop off unused or expired medications — no questions asked — and a shredding bin will also be available for secure document disposal. It’s all part of a nationwide effort to help reduce prescription drug misuse and keep our community safe.

Get ready for some Blue Streak spirit taking over downtown Sebring! The Sebring High School Homecoming Parade rolls out tomorrow morning, October 23rd, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Drivers can expect temporary closures and slowdowns along South Commerce Avenue and nearby streets while the parade is underway. There won’t be any official detours, but Sebring Police will be on-site directing traffic and keeping things running smoothly. Officials say it will be a relatively quick parade— so if you’ll be downtown, plan a little extra travel time and cheer on the Blue Streaks as they celebrate homecoming!

Floridians who rely on SNAP benefits will stop receiving payments on October 31st if the government shutdown continues. The shutdown has led to a lapse in funding for the Department of Ag’s Food and Nutrition Service. Nearly three-million people receive SNAP benefits in Florida.
