A countywide burn ban is now in effect in Highlands County through January 1st. The ban covers all cities and unincorporated areas and is in place due to extremely dry conditions that increase wildfire risk. The ban prohibits campfires, bonfires, yard debris burning, and fireworks. Cooking on gas or charcoal grills is still allowed, and activities approved by the Florida Forest Service may continue. Officials say violations are a misdemeanor and could result in fines or jail time. The ban may be lifted early if conditions improve.

A Highlands County fire engine was involved in a crash Tuesday night while responding to an emergency call. Officials say a driver suddenly slammed on the brakes when they saw the lights and sirens, causing another vehicle to hit the back of the engine. All firefighters are safe, and no one involved needed to be transported. Crews are reminding drivers to stay calm, slow down gradually, and move over safely when emergency vehicles approach—sudden stops can create dangerous chain reactions and delay lifesaving response.
