Highlands County School Board Chair Isaac Durrance announced he will not seek reelection after completing two four-year terms that began in 2018. Durrance, a former district teacher and assistant principal, says he plans to continue giving full effort through the end of his term in November and will mentor Vice Chair Mason Whidden as a potential successor. During his tenure, the district earned its first “B” accountability grade since 2011, improved graduation rates, expanded school safety measures, and completed major facility upgrades funded by the half-cent sales tax. Durrance represents District 1, which includes Avon Park schools, and no candidates have yet filed to run for the seat.
