Tons of fans packed downtown Sebring Tuesday as Fan Fest kicked off Race Week for the 12 Hours of Sebring. Crowds gathered for driver Q&As, a transporter parade on a new route, pit stop demos, and kids’ Power Wheels races. Teams also showcased new cars, including the global debut of a Lamborghini GT3 entry competing in the GTD Pro class this weekend at Sebring International Raceway. City leaders say this year’s turnout appears to be the largest yet, with visitors traveling from across the country.
Construction has begun at Sebring Regional Airport on a new Taxiway Delta project aimed at improving safety and efficiency. The new taxiway will eliminate the need for planes to backtrack on the runway, reducing delays and enhancing aircraft movement. The $2.2 million project is funded primarily by federal and state aviation programs. Airport officials say the upgrade will support continued growth and keep operations safe and efficient for pilots, businesses, and visitors.
Highlands County leaders are strengthening efforts to protect senior residents through a new TRIAD agreement. Representatives from the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office, Sebring Police Department, and Lake Placid Police Department signed the cooperative agreement during a SALT meeting on March 17. The partnership connects law enforcement with Seniors and Law Enforcement Together to address safety concerns among older residents. Officials say the initiative will focus on reducing crime, increasing awareness, and improving quality of life through community programs, training, and shared resources.
Polk County gets to pay tribute today to a fallen soldier. The body of Army Major Reserve Cody Khork will return home. The 35-year-old from Winter Haven was killed this month in a drone attack in Kuwait. His body is expected to arrive at Lakeland Linder International Airport at 1:00 this afternoon. From there, there will be a procession to the Oak Ridge Funeral Home in Winter Haven.
