The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office says the threats targeted local elementary, middle, and high schools. After thorough searches, authorities determined the threats were not credible and confirmed all students and staff were safe. Officials also noted similar threats have been reported in other areas. The investigation is ongoing as deputies work to identify who is responsible.

The Southwest Florida Water Management District has declared an “Extreme” water shortage due to ongoing drought—impacting parts of Highlands County. Starting April 3rd, residents—including those on private wells—are limited to watering lawns just one day per week, during overnight hours only. Officials say the region is facing a major rainfall deficit, with water levels in lakes, rivers, and aquifers continuing to drop. Additional restrictions include limits on car washing, fountains, and even when restaurants serve water. The order remains in effect through July 1st.

A deadly three-vehicle crash in Lake Wales has claimed the life of an 18-year-old. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened Tuesday night on US 27 near Pedalers Pond Boulevard. Investigators say a northbound Honda lost control, crossed the median, and collided with an oncoming Pontiac—before being struck by a semi-truck. The Pontiac driver was pronounced dead at the scene. All drivers were reportedly wearing their seatbelts, and the cause of the accident is still being investigated.

A Bartow woman is facing felony charges after deputies say she sold properties she didn’t own across multiple states. Investigators say 63-year-old Cheryl Annette Jefferson used fake documents to sell land in Florida, Georgia, and Colorado—collecting more than $421,000.In a bizarre twist, she reportedly told detectives the money was tied to a recording studio for Florida Georgia Line—but authorities say there’s no connection. Some owners only discovered their land was gone when trying to pay taxes. The investigation is ongoing.
