A 57-year-old man, identified as Horace Butler, was arrested in Highlands County after deputies say he assaulted a woman with a large walking stick during an argument. According to reports, the victim suffered injuries to her arm and leg after being struck multiple times. Butler is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Authorities say the case remains under investigation, and all suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.

Highlands County School Board members are closely reviewing ongoing budget concerns as they consider proposed cost-cutting measures that could impact several district programs. Among the proposals under consideration is the possible closure of The Academy program, with a transition of students to virtual learning options. Board members emphasized that while tough choices may be ahead, their focus remains on maintaining financial stability while protecting students and supporting district staff.

The annual Bluegrass & Blueberry Festival is returning to Avon Park this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Donaldson Park. The free event will feature over 100 vendors, live music, food, and family-friendly activities. A K-9 with the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office has advanced to the second round of the K-9 March Madness Tournament. K-9 Goose is among the remaining competitors as voting continues through March 31 at 7 p.m., with the public able to cast one vote every 24 hours. The statewide competition, hosted by the Florida Sheriffs Association, features top K-9 units from across Florida and continues through multiple elimination rounds.
