News Update for 4/2/26

The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to assist with immigration enforcement in Highlands County through federal programs that allow deputies to issue detainers. Since 2025, trained deputies can identify individuals during arrests and coordinate with ICE. Data shows 61 encounters with suspected unauthorized immigrants, most involving local charges. Officials say enforcement is tied to criminal arrests, not targeted sweeps.

Over a dozen people are facing charges after a child predator sting in Central Florida. The Osceola County sheriff’s office announced yesterday 16 people were arrested under Operation Catch A Con. The FBI, Homeland Security and local law enforcement agencies were involved in the three-day operation. The sheriff’s office says 15 of those arrested traveled to meet what they thought was a minor child for sex. Instead, they met deputies ready to take them into custody. Investigators say one suspect works for a non-profit ministry group, one is a school bus driver in Volusia County, and one is a nurse assistant at Advent Health.

A new fishing destination is now open in Hardee County, bringing nine freshwater lakes to an area that once had none. The Florida Fishing Trail Grand Opening was held March 27th, transforming reclaimed phosphate mining land into a hub for bass fishing and outdoor recreation. The project is a partnership between the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, The Mosaic Company, and the county, with hundreds of fish stocked ahead of opening. Officials say the trail offers shoreline, boat, and kayak access, creating a new outdoor attraction for anglers across the region.

Florida residents can fish without a license this weekend, April 4th and 5th, during the state’s freshwater license-free fishing days. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is encouraging families and visitors to take advantage of the opportunity, with multiple public fishing spots open statewide. All other fishing regulations, including size and bag limits, still apply. For locations, beginner tips, and event details, visit MyFWC.com.
