News Update fopr 5/18/23

Officials from Highlands County’s tourism sector yesterday unrolled their proposal for the addition of another cent to the local tourist tax. Apparently, they are looking to expand the county’s ballfield complex, and want to add yet another tourism asset, described as a "multi-use facility."

Although the ballfields generate only about a third of what it takes to maintain them, during a county commission meeting Tuesday, it was revealed that tourist tax money can be used for maintenence costs.

Fire officials in Sebring are investigating the cause of a roof collapse on the Historic Circle in downtown Sebring. Workers at Sebring Subs say they heard a loud bang, and saw the panel ceiling above them fold downward.
Workers and customers fled, shaken but unharmed. Apparently, there had been some work being done on the second floor, but it remains unclear as to what caused the incident.

Sebring Mayor John Shoop has called for a workshop to discuss the future of the Alan Altvader Cultural Complex and the stalled Waterfront District. He noted the city has recieved letters from both the Highlands Art League and the Sebring Historical Society asking for long term leases on the Weigle House and the Clavelli House, which front Lakeview Drive.
Shoop says it is time to decide whether to develop a long term plan or bulldoze the structures. Council agreed to have such a confab in the next few eeks. No date was set.

Today is May 18th, and that’s International Museum Day. A half-dozen local facilities will participate in the observance with specially-conducted tours, receptions, presentations and exhobits.
The Children’s Museum in Sebring will have free entry from 4-7 this evening for open play. Lake Placid’s Historic Depot Museum will have an open house from 4-6 this evening, The Military Sea Services Museum in Sebring will have extended Hours as will the Museum of Florida Art & Culture at South Florida State College and the Peter Powell Roberts Museum in Avon Park.
