The Highlands County Planning and Zoning Commission and Local Planning Agency meet today at 3 p.m. at the Government Center in Sebring. Commissioners will hold a public hearing on a proposed amendment involving Lake Placid Groves, which would update development conditions and remove expired phasing requirements. The property would retain its Mixed-Use designation. There is no Board of Adjustment meeting this month.
The Sebring City Council recently heard five proposals for operating or leasing the Golf Club of Sebring and is expected to consider its options at the August 18th meeting. The proposals range from third-party management to long-term leases, with plans addressing course improvements, tourism and financial sustainability. Council members will then move forward with negotiations on a potential agreement.
A Wahneta man is facing multiple charges after allegedly fleeing from Polk County deputies two nights in a row. Thirty-five-year-old Ernest Lee Lamb ran into the woods near Thompson Nursery and Eloise Loop roads Saturday. Deputies and Auburndale Police K9 Arlo located Lamb, who was taken into custody without incident. He was arrested on several outstanding felony warrants and an additional charge of resisting an officer without violence.
Polk County could play a key role in the future of flying cars. Governor Ron DeSantis visited Auburndale yesterday to highlight SunTrax, a leading facility for transportation research and innovation. The facility is working on Advanced Air Mobility technology, including electric aircraft that could help reduce traffic congestion. Test flights are expected later this year.
