News Update for 08/18/26

The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office, Highlands County Fire-Rescue, Avon Park and Sebring fire departments, and the School Board are conducting security walk-throughs at all county school campuses over the next three days. Officials say the exercises are part of campus safety preparations. Residents may see multiple fire trucks, ambulances and law enforcement vehicles at schools during the walk-throughs.

Sebring Firemen Incorporated is raising $50,000 for a mural celebrating the organization’s 100th anniversary in February 2027. The mural will be installed on the wall near the new Sadie’s Place development on North Ridgewood Drive. It will highlight the fire department, the 12 Hours of Sebring, the Highlands County Fair and Firemen’s Field. The CRA has approved a $5,000 contribution toward the project.

Highlands Lakeside Theatre is hosting its annual golf tournament Saturday, October 24th at Sun ‘n Lake Golf and Country Club in Sebring. Breakfast and registration begin at 7 a.m., with an 8 a.m. shotgun start and luncheon at 1 p.m. Proceeds support the theatre’s educational workshops, student competitions, scholarships and production costs. Two food truck owners are facing criminal charges in Polk County. Winter Haven Public Safety announced yesterday that Island Jerk Caribbean food truck owners Marlon and Tamika Cummings were arrested Friday. Investigators say the two racked up charges on a debit card they found in a gas station parking lot in Eagle Lake on Highway 17 last month. The charges added up to almost 14-hundred dollars before the owner canceled the card. The Cummingses are charged with felony grand theft.
