Sebring Police are investigating a shooting that happened Monday night near Sebring Parkway and North Ridgewood Drive. Police say one person suffered a gunshot wound. Both directions of Sebring Parkway were temporarily closed between North Ridgewood and Grapefruit Avenue while first responders worked the scene. Police later announced the scene was clear.
The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office is warning students about the risks of a game known as “Senior Assassin.” The game involves students using water guns, Nerf guns and similar items to target classmates. Deputies say bringing anything resembling a weapon onto school property could lead to arrest and expulsion. They also warn the items could be mistaken for real firearms, creating a potentially dangerous situation.
Highlands County Fire Rescue firefighter/EMT Kyle Norvis has received the department’s Medal of Valor — its highest honor for a first responder. While off duty in June, Norvis ran to a neighbor’s burning home, searched several bedrooms and rescued a disoriented woman from the kitchen. His actions are credited with helping save her life. Norvis is only the second person to receive the HCFR Medal of Valor.
SunTrax has attracted Israeli aviation company AIR to Polk County, where the company will establish its U.S. headquarters and a 20,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. AIR plans to build electric air taxis and autonomous cargo aircraft in Auburndale, with flight testing also moving to SunTrax. Testing is expected to begin by the end of the year.
