News Update for 09/30/26

A verdict is in in the TJ Wiggins murder trial. A Polk County jury has found Tony Lee “TJ” Wiggins Jr. guilty on all three counts of first-degree murder in the 2020 deaths of Damion Tillman, Brandon Rollins and Keven Springfield. The three men were killed while meeting for a night of fishing near Frostproof. The jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts. The penalty phase of the trial begins tomorrow and the 32-year-old Wiggins could get the death penalty.

The second annual S.A.L.T. Senior Expo is coming up October 20th in Sebring. The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sebring Christian Church, connecting seniors, caregivers and families with local organizations and services. A driver in DeSoto County has been cited after deputies say a van passed a stopped school bus while its stop sign was extended and red lights were flashing. The incident was captured on the dashcam of a sheriff’s deputy, who immediately pulled the driver over. The driver told the deputy they thought the vehicle was a construction truck and said they weren’t wearing their glasses at the time.

Florida is rolling out a new driver’s license and state ID design this week. It features iconic images, like the Castillo de San Marcos, a manatee, an alligator, and the Space Shuttle Discovery. The new cards will start to be issued on Wednesday. But there’s no need to rush out and replace your current license — it remains valid until it expires.
