Highlands County residents are invited to a Town Hall Meeting preview focused on key local issues. The event takes place Wednesday, January 14th, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the South Florida State College University Center Auditorium, Building B. Highlands County Commissioner Don Elwell and members of the county’s executive team will be on hand for a discussion and open Q&A. The event is free, open to all residents, and welcomes all viewpoints, regardless of political affiliation.
South Florida State College’s Elementary Teacher Education program has earned renewed approval from the Florida Department of Education, securing accreditation through 2032—the maximum seven years allowed. College leaders say the program meets all state standards and includes built-in ESOL and Reading endorsements, allowing graduates to qualify for teacher certification without delays or additional coursework.
An adult daycare center called Golden Years Adult Daycare is planning to open in about five months at Lakeshore Mall in Sebring. The center will operate like a recreational and activity hub for seniors, offering transportation, breakfast and lunch, along with activities such as bingo, board games, music, and social time. Owner Yannetti Bermudez says licensing and renovations are currently underway, with hopes to open as soon as possible. A storefront sign is already visible near the south end of the mall.
Ridge Area Arc will host a Volunteer Fair on January 28 from 9 to 11 a.m. at its Avon Park campus, offering the public a chance to learn about volunteer opportunities supporting individuals with disabilities. The interactive event will include a facility tour, classroom visits, and hands-on activities with participants. Organizers are seeking volunteers for weekends, fundraisers, skilled trades like carpentry and welding, gardening, and even music. Those interested are encouraged to register by January 21.
