News Update for 10/02/26

A new perpetual trophy has been unveiled ahead of the 75th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, set for March 20th, 2027. Named for race founder Alec Ulmann, the trophy features several nods to Sebring’s history — including its World War Two roots as Hendricks Field. Its six panels honor the original six-hour endurance race, while 12 uprights and a clock face represent the 12-hour event. Tickets and hospitality packages are now available through Sebring International Raceway.

The Highlands County School Board is considering merging two elementary schools as part of budget-cutting efforts. During a Monday workshop, board members discussed Avon and Memorial Elementary, the district’s two smallest schools. A merger could save an estimated one-point-five million dollars. Superintendent Brenda Longshore will prepare additional numbers. Another budget workshop is scheduled for October 15th.

The Highlands County Hospital District has given HCA Florida Highlands Hospital the first opportunity to submit a proposal to continue leasing the hospital property in Sebring. HCA’s proposal is due by October 15th. The current lease expires July 31st, 2027. Any future agreement will include requirements for full-service hospital care, including emergency, maternity, cardiac and other specialty services, along with charity care for residents.

American Legion Post 69 in Avon Park is organizing a motorcycle poker run to raise money for the Florida Medal of Honor Memorial in Sebring. The ride is October 10th, with registration from 10 to 11 a.m. and kickstands up at 11. Riders will make stops in Sebring and Lake Placid before returning to Avon Park. The best poker hand wins, and a celebration with live music follows from 4 to 7 p.m.
