A shooting in Sebring last night remains under investigation. Deputies responded to the area of Melady Avenue, near Kenilworth Avenue and Youthcare Lane. At the time, authorities said two suspects were believed to be at large, leading to a search of the area involving law enforcement and K-9 units. Residents were asked to avoid the area while deputies worked the scene. There are no additional details available at this time.
DeSoto County officials are warning residents about fraudulent invoices being sent by email. Since May, scammers have been posing as the county’s Planning and Zoning or Building Departments and using the county seal on invoices requesting payment by wire transfer. Officials say legitimate county payments are made through the customer service portal. Anyone who receives a suspicious invoice should contact the county before making a payment.
Plans for a BJ’s Wholesale Club on the north side of Sebring are moving closer to construction. The property plat has now been submitted to the city, allowing officials to issue a building permit. The club is planned for U.S. 27, just north of Keiber Boulevard, near Denny’s and the Holiday Inn Express. The project is expected to include a gas station and three additional outparcels.
Registration is now open for Heartland Toys for Tots in Highlands and Hardee counties. Families can apply for holiday assistance through November 14th at highlandsfl.toysfortots.org. Organizers say the program has helped more than 13-thousand local children over the past two years. Toy distribution is scheduled for December 6th at Lakeshore Mall in Sebring and December 14th in Wauchula.
