A 76-year-old Sebring man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Sunday morning in Highlands County. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man was driving north on County Road 721 near U.S. 98 when he failed to stop at the intersection, veered onto the grass shoulder, went airborne, and collided with a tree. Troopers say the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by FHP.
The Sebring Post Office will soon bear the name of a true hometown hero. A public dedication ceremony will be held Friday, October 24th at 12:30 p.m. to officially rename the post office in honor of Army Air Corps Major Thomas B. McGuire, a World War II flying ace and Medal of Honor recipient. The event takes place at 518 N. Ridgewood Drive and will feature remarks from Congressman Scott Franklin, local educators, and community leaders. McGuire, a Sebring High School graduate, became one of America’s top combat pilots with 38 aerial victories before giving his life in the Philippines in 1945.
The community is invited to attend the first annual S.A.L.T. Senior Expo, taking place Tuesday, October 21st, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Sebring Christian Church, 4514 Hammock Road. This free event will feature a light dinner and provide valuable information on resources, services, and opportunities available to seniors, caregivers, and their families.

Sun ‘N Lake Improvement District has officially kicked off its annual food and essentials drive to support families in need across Highlands County. The collection runs now through November 14th, with drop-off locations at the District Office, Recreation Office, and Island View Restaurant & Pub. Organizers hope to gather over 1,000 food items and 200 hygiene products to benefit Highlands County Veterans Services and the Heartland Food Bank.
