The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help identifying suspects in two separate theft investigations. Deputies say someone stole a black-and-red backpack during vehicle burglaries on Longview Road, Springdale Road and Grouper Drive in Sebring early Saturday. In a separate case, a woman allegedly stole a potted plant and aluminum sign from an Avon Park home Sunday. She was reportedly driving a silver Hyundai. Anyone with information is asked to call 863-402-7350 or contact Heartland Crime Stoppers. Anonymous tips could qualify for a cash reward.
Drivers in Avon Park should prepare for temporary traffic changes along South Lake Boulevard. The city says a portion of the road closed Monday, October 26, and is expected to remain closed for approximately one week as improvements are completed. Detour signs will be posted to help drivers navigate around the closure. Motorists should allow extra travel time and use caution in the area.
Drivers in downtown Sebring should plan for traffic delays Thursday morning as Sebring High School holds its annual homecoming parade. The parade runs from 9 to approximately 10:30, traveling between the high school and Sebring Middle School and back. Temporary closures will affect South Commerce Avenue, Pine Street and several surrounding roads. No detours are planned, but police will direct traffic along the parade route. All affected roads are expected to reopen by 10:30.
A judge is considering whether to dismiss a second-degree murder charge against Javionne Floyd, accused of fatally shooting Niyke Echavarria in Avon Park in 2023. Floyd’s attorney argues the victim may have been armed, but investigators say reports of a missing gun were never verified. Prosecutors argue the shooting was unjustified. The judge has yet to rule.
