Early voting started yesterday in Highlands County with a light turnout across the three polling locations here. Some 1,660 people showed up to cast ballots in person in Lake Placid, Sebring and Avon Park.
Although the attention has been focused on the Governor’s race, the constitutional amendments and merit retention for judges – there is a Highlands County commission seat up for grabs as well as the mayor’s office and a city council seat in Avon Park.
There’s lots of activity today out at the Sebring International Raceway. First, competitors in the World Racing League will start qualifying in all divisions for their weekend event. That’ll start at 1:00 this afternoon.
The GT and Prototype-Like cars will be running a couple of eight-hour enduros tomorrow and Sunday.
Beginning at 7:00 this evening there will be Race Car Trunker Treat out at Sebring International. In addition to goodies and race cars on display, there will be a kids costume contest.
The annual Halloween on the Circle event will be held in Sebring this evening. That event gets started at 5:30 with Tricker Treating, there will be a live DJ, food, games and photo opportunities. It’s being billed as a "family friendly" event.
First Baptist Church in Sebring will host a block party this evening with games, a bounce house, food and pumpkins.
The traditional Tricker treating is set for tomorrow evening across Highlands County.
The D-SNAP food assistance program will start tomorrow in the Alan Jay Center at the Highlands County Fairgrounds. Local officials expect the response to be so great, they have closed a section of Kenilworth Blvd from 6am-6pm both days
Meanwhile, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other programs currently have their offices in operation out at the Ag-Center. There residents can apply for disaster assistance in the wake of Hurricane Ian. No reservations are required, it’s first come, first served.
