Highlands County Fire Rescue crews rushed to Hummingbird Avenue in Sebring just before 2 o’clock Tuesday for a brush fire covering about five acres. No homes were threatened, and thanks in part to drone technology helping firefighters track hot spots and fire movement, the blaze was reported fully contained by 5:30 p.m. Crews continue to monitor the area. Officials are reminding everyone to avoid any unnecessary burning during these dry conditions and to review Florida’s burn rules at the state forestry website.
Highlands County Officials are reminding drivers to slow down after a Tuesday morning traffic sweep on US 27 through Avon Park, Lake Placid, and Venus. In just a few hours, deputies handed out 21 citations, 21 warnings, and made one arrest. Speeds topped out at 85 miles per hour. With the holidays coming up, law enforcement urges everyone to take it easy on the roads—unless, of course, you’re racing at Sebring International Raceway or sprinting to grab the last slice of grandma’s pecan pie. Stay safe, Highlands County!
Exciting news for locals and visitors—there’s a brand-new interactive information kiosk coming to downtown Sebring! While the kiosk has been installed, it’s still under construction, and city officials will announce when it’s fully operational. Once open, the kiosk will be a one-stop spot to find special events, fun activities, and dining options in Sebring, Lake Placid, and Avon Park. This project was made possible thanks to the Highlands County TDC and the dedicated staff of the City of Sebring, who helped bring it to life.
