News Update for 12/11/23

It’ll be a twin bill for the Avon Park city council tonight, as they first hold their regular meeting, then will go into an executive session. The agenda shows the council first will take care of a lot of municipal utility issues, including a drinking water project, a sewage treatment & disposal remediation plan and a stormwater assessment presentation.
Council members also will look at hiring a legal team to take care of forclosures in the City of Charm and will mull over a number of event requests. Following their regular meeting they will hold an executive session to consider a collective barganing agreement with union firefighters.
This will be the last meeting of the year for the Avon Park council.

Another candidate has thrown her hat into the ring for a seat on the School Board of Highlands County. Lauren Bush has filed to run for the District 2 seat, taking on longtime incumbent Donna Howerton.
Bush already has made her first campaign appearance, riding in the Lake Placid Christmas Parade this past weekend.

The Lake Placid Christmas Parade came and went this past Saturday, marking the end of the processionals in central Florida. Christmas activities will continue.
Tonight will be Christmas in the Park in Avon Park with performances by the Avon Park Elementary, Avon Park Middle, and Avon Park High School choirs. That will be in Donaldson Park.
The Carousel of Lights will continue in downtown Sebring until Christmas Eve and the Christmas in the Village drive-thru will be held this weekend at the Florida Flywheelers Club off the Avon Park Cutoff Road.

Some blustery weather moved through Highlands County overnight. There were some reports of lawn ornamants and trash cans being blown over. However, law enforcemtent officials say there have been no reports of flooding or appreciable wind damage.

A Bartow police officer was injured last night in a traffic crash. It happened as the Sergeant was investigating a pedestrian-related traffic accident on Van Fleet Drive East. He apparently was struck by a mini-van.
The Sergeant was taken to a trauma center with what were described as non-life threatening injuries. No word on the driver of the mini-van or the pedestrian-related mishap.
