Sebring police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened last night in the area of Melady Avenue. Officers responded just before 8 p.m., where a large law enforcement presence remained on scene for several hours. Authorities say the incident was isolated and there was no threat to the community. Residents were asked to avoid the area while investigators worked to gather evidence. Police say additional details will be released as they become available.

A former Polk County attorney who stole millions from his clients has now been sentenced. Jason Penrod, founder of Family Elder Law with offices in Lakeland, Lake Wales, and Sebring, pleaded guilty on December 12th to multiple counts of grand theft and money laundering. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison, followed by 15 years of probation. Prosecutors say Penrod misused nearly two million dollars from client trust accounts, much of it lost through gambling. His law license has been permanently revoked.

The Highlands County School Board will meet late Thursday to consider a stop-loss insurance proposal aimed at reducing rising health care costs. District officials say the self-insurance plan has run at a deficit, including a $2 million loss last year. A new proposal could save hundreds of thousands in premiums and significantly reduce the district’s financial risk tied to large medical claims.

Several holiday events are taking place across Sebring this week. Gift wrapping services are available at Lakeshore Mall, where the Aktion Club of Highlands County is accepting donations to support its Christmas Adopt-A-Child program for children with disabilities. Santa will also be available at the mall for family photos through Christmas Eve. Meanwhile, the community is invited to attend Christmas at Sebring Village, featuring seasonal lights, live music, and appearances by Mr. and Mrs. Claus.
