News Update for 12/18/23

Although there are no local statistics, this weekend’s storm is responsible for record rainfall totals across central Florida. Breaking records were Orlando Interational Airport, plus the cities of Sanford and Leesburg.
Brevard County registered the highest total with 11 inches of rain.
The weather caused some cancellations locally, but there was no damage reported.
Meanwhile, flooding could be an issue along the First Coast today in northen Florida. Meanwhile the National Weather Service has a Coastal Flood Watch.

Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies culminated a several month undercover investigation over the weekend with a drug bust. Lawmen raided a house on Cherokee Avenue in Avon Park where they arrested 36-year-old Omar Juqsue Rushing.
Among othet things, Rushing was charged with traficking fentanyl and methamphetamine as well as posession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Also living in the home was 58-year-old Willie Henry Smith. He was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine, possession of drug equipment, and possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon.

Highlands County firefighters had some work over the weekend, units from West Sebring were called to East Claridge Avenue in Avon Park, to extinguish the flames from a pile burn that got out of control.
There were no injuries and no buildings were damaged. The Florida Forest Service is investigating.

Dozens of volunteers turned out over the weekend to decorate the final resting place of local veterans. It was part of the "Wreaths Across America" program, where more than 500 sponsored wreaths were placed on veteran’s graves in the Garden of Valor at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
