News Update for 4/10/23

A hostage situation turned deadly during the early hours this morning. Not many details have been released about the incident, other than there wer two men found dead inside a home in Lake Wales.
Reportedly the two were a local resident and his step-son.

Avon Park city council members will hear about an "Enough is Enough" Rally when they meet in regular session this evening.
A May 6th march is slated to he held from the football field on South Delaney Avenue to the basketball courts at Fred Connor Street. Several shootings have occured in that area. City officials have responded to citizen requests for additional lighting there.
In other action, the city will look at a request by the Florida Department of Transportation for some additional land near Sun Pure Road. They say the right of way is needed to help put in a traffic signal at the intersection of Highway 27, to facilitate truck traffic at the NuCor plant.

The second of three community receptions for hopefuls looking to become the new president of South Florida State College will be held today. Dr. John M Davis, currently the Vice president of Administrative Services at Germanna College in Locust Grove, Virginia will be feted.
The meet-and-greet for School officials, community leaders, students and interested citizens will be held this afternoon at 4:00 at the Alan Jay Wildstein Center for the performing Arts on SFSC’s Avon Park Campus.

It’s hard to believe, but people are moving out of Highlands County. But a new report by Stacker found, they didn’t move far. Over the past several years the major destination has been Polk County. Hillsborough, Charlotte, Orange and Broward counties round out the five top destinations for those departing Highlands.
In fact, Kent County, Michigan was the top out-of-state destination – that was ranked as nunber eight, and the only non-Florida destination in the top 10.
