News Update for 4/25/22

Highlands County sheriff’s officials are investigating a weekend shooting incident. Apparently, a 32-year-old Avon Park man was shot and killed at a vacant lot along South Carolina Avenue in Avon Park Saturday night.
Authorities say the suspect allegedly stole a car at the scene and fled to a Sebring home. Arrested was 30-year-old Kenneth Jerome Pearson. He was charged with first degree murder and booked into the Highlands County jail

One person was killed and two others were seriously injured in a weekend traffic crash north of Lake Placid. Florida Highway Patrol reports indicate a pickup, driven by a 56-year-old Lake Placid man pulled onto Highway 27 from Lake Francis Road into the path of an oncoming SUV and was hit broadside.
The force of the impact caused the truck to overturn. The driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene. Both occupants of the SUV were seriously injured.

Avon Park city council members will discuss their vision for the City of Charm when they get together in regular session this evening. The move comes as part of an effort to appoint members to the city’s Planning & Zoning board.
Mayor Garrett Anderson called for the session after having a dust-up with councilwoman Bernice Taylor about making the city more business friendly.
The discussion will come right before vote that could update the city’s officials zoning map.

After a number of complaints that parents and residents could no longer view previous school board meetings. Highlands County school officials now have made the audio recordings of the board meetings, available online.
The link to the recordings has been posted on the school board’s website. The link is at the top of the page. Officials also have added an new feature that now will allow parents and residents to add comments and concerns.
The action comes after parents and residents came to multiple meetings to complain about the handling of sex education in the Highlands County school system.
