There have been some spring sightings of Love Bugs over the past few days, but they have been few and far between. In fact,the past few season infestations have been extremely light.
What had been swarms of the insects that fly united, has dwindled to random appearances here and there by the pests.
Experts are at a loss to explain the sudden decrease in Love Bugs, and officials say there’s no funding for research on the issue.
But never fear, Florida is awash with pests and reports indicate that the mayflies are out in force. They are attractaced to light and will gather in large numbers around doorways and other lit areas.
The former Chief Financial officer of Florida Development Corporation, Charles Young jr. has been arrested by Lake Wales police. The city of Lake Wales had entered into a nearly million dollar partnership with the FDC to help develop local businesses in the Crown Jewel of the Ridge.
According to reports, Young allegedly overpaid himself and used development corporation money to pay his personal credit card bills.
Young was arrested at his home in Hillsobrough County and jailed without bond. He is awaiting extradition to Polk County.
A man who became synonomous with Duke energy in the 1990s is being honored with a scholarship program. The Jerry Miller Servant Leadership Scholarship is being created through the Polk Education Foundation.
Miller’s Duke Energy district included Highlands, Polk and Hardee counties. Officials say the goal of the program is to raise enough so that a scholarship award can be made in perpetuity.
Donations are being taken at the Polk Education Foundation. Officials at Citizens Bank & Trust in Lake Wales have pledged to match each dollar donated.
