A 33-year-old Sebring man accused in a 2022 fatal beating will proceed to trial after a judge denied his request for self-defense immunity. Jeff Danley is charged in the death of Richard David MacBain III following an August incident after the two had been drinking at a local bar. Prosecutors say Ring camera video and witness testimony show Danley punched, restrained, and dragged MacBain outside his home, causing fatal injuries. Judge David Ward ruled there was no reasonable threat to justify the force used, rejecting Danley’s Stand Your Ground claim and allowing the second-degree murder case to move forward.

A Highlands County resident was recently targeted in a scam involving callers posing as Apple Support and federal officials. The victim was told their financial accounts were part of an investigation and was pressured to transfer thousands of dollars and download an app that could have given scammers access to their device. Authorities warn that legitimate companies and law enforcement will never request money transfers or remote access during investigations, and residents should always verify before taking action.

A Sebring man accused in the 2023 killing of a mother is set to stand trial on July 6th. Prosecutors say 39-year-old Tamario Leron Sanders is charged in the death of D’Etta Monique Maura, whose body was found in her home after she failed to pick up her child from school. Investigators say Ring camera footage, a matching shoe print, and burned clothing recovered at Sanders’ home helped tie him to the crime. Sanders faces first-degree murder and other felony charges that carry the possibility of life in prison.

A 76-year-old Lakeland man is dead following a deputy-involved shooting Tuesday night during a response to a reported suicidal situation in the 2900 block of Socrum Loop Road West. Authorities say deputies were attempting to de-escalate the situation when the man allegedly fired at law enforcement after his wife unexpectedly arrived at the scene and ran toward him. A deputy intervened to pull the woman to safety before shots were exchanged between the suspect and multiple deputies. Officials report no deputies or civilians were injured, and the incident is now under investigation by an independent task force.
