News Update for 6/28/22

It’s been a year since Avon Park city council members heard a proposal from Adam Greenstein to install kayak dispensers on the shores of Lake Verona. The idea was, that people could use their smartphones to order and use the watercraft at Donaldson Park.
Still, there’s been no local action on the project. Avon Park City Manager Mark Shrader said he spoke to officials of rent dot fun about six weeks ago – they said they still are trying to line up the boats. They gave no indication on when they might locate here.

This is election season, and the Highlands Tea Party will continue their series of local candidate appearances this evening. Former Highlands County Commissioner Don Elwell will address the group and take questions. He is seeking to regain the District Two commission seat.
The session is free and open to all residents who want to learn more about the candidates. The meeting will commence at 6:00 this evening at the Vietnam Veterans Hall – 33565 Grand Prix Drive (behind the Sebring Wal-Mart).

Apparently, there’s yet another new scam. Lake Placid Caladium Festival officials say somebody is collecting vendor fees for the upcoming Caladium Festival, but it’s not them.
The impostors apparently are asking for the money to be routed through PayPal. Caladium Festival spokesmen say, they don’t use any electronic collection services.

Officials at South Florida State College have taken a page from the fast food restaurants, telling students "Have It Your Way." The school has rolled out a new marketing campaign called "Your Path, Your Way."
The program lets students know that they are the leaders of their own educational destiny in learning, succeeding and pursuing the career of their choice.

A Frostproof man has been charged in connection with a wrong-way driving incident that resulted in death for a Lake Wales woman. Mark Anthony Poe hs been charged with vehicular homicide.
Polk County Sheriff’s officials say the 39-year-old Poe was westbound in the eastbound lanes of State Road 60 when his pickup slammed into a car driven by the 27-year-old Lake Wales woman.
She was killed in the crash. Her name has not been released.
