News Update for 7/9/21

A blaze at a residence on Century Blvd kept Firefighters in the Avon Park area busy during the early morning hours. The call came in shortly before 1:30 this morning.
Units from West Sebring and the city of Avon Park responded to the blaze. Reportedly, the manufactured home was fully involved when they arrived at the scene.
No injuries reported. The Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to determine the cause. Reportedly, the residence was totally destroyed.

There were no serious injuries but part of Highway 27 was closed last night in Avon Park when a car hit a power pole. The incident occurred about 10:30 near the intersection of Winthrop Street.
The force of the impact dislodged a power line. The northbound lanes were shut while Duke Energy Crews effected repairs.

A Lake Placid couple reportedly have been arrested in Frostproof, after Polk County Sheriff’s deputies found them in a stolen car. The pair led deputies on a brief chase, where stop-sticks were deployed to bring the Kia Forte to a halt.
35-year-old Nikita Starkey surrendered to police while the driver, 21-year-old Ste’Qua Hawthorne was found hiding in a wooded area.
Hawthorne has been charged with Grand Theft Auto, Fleeing to Elude and resisting arrest, while Starkey faces multiple drug charges as well as possession of personal identifcation.
Both were booked into the Polk County jail.
