>>HIGHLANDS COUNTY THANKSGIVING SAFETY REMINDER
As you celebrate today, officials urge everyone to stay safe in the kitchen. Keep an eye on your turkey—unattended cooking is the leading cause of holiday fires—and keep kids and pets away from hot ovens. If you’re using a turkey fryer, do it outside on a flat surface, keep the bird fully thawed and dry, and have a fire extinguisher handy. And if a grease fire starts, never use water, turn off the heat, cover the flames if safe, or call 9-1-1.Enjoy your Thanksgiving, and stay safe, Highlands County!
>>UPCOMING ROAD CLOSURE HIGHLANDS COUNTY
Highlands County Drivers are advised that Booker Avenue will be closed this Friday, November 28th, and Sunday, November 30th, from 2 to 8 p.m., between Harris Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard for the Mother Holdman Thanksgiving Celebration. Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes when traveling through the area. Please exercise caution, follow posted detours, and plan additional travel time around the closure to ensure safe and timely travel.
>>SEBRING BANK OF AMERICA BUILDING
Sebring’s old Bank of America building is about to get a major glow-up. The long-vacant building on South Ridgewood Drive is set to become the new home of Marmer Construction’s offices upstairs, and a combined Sebring Hall of Fame Race Museum and Sebring Historical Society downstairs. The CRA bought the 33,000-square-foot property for $1.2 million in June 2024 and is close to finalizing an incentive agreement with Marmer Construction, with approval expected in December and hopes for a groundbreaking early next year. Plans call for gutting the building and rebuilding the interior with flexible exhibit space, race history displays, Sebring and Highlands County history, and even a small theater for films and educational programs.
