More than 100 people turned out last night at the Sebring Middle School to hear Florida Chancellor for K-12 Public Education Jacob Oliva about new provisions from Governor Ron Desantis that will do away with the Common Core instructional.
Some came from Polk County and from as far away as Naples to participate.
It was the first stop on a listening tour by Oliva and Florida Department of Education staff. They heard concerns about civics education, complex and confusing mathematics instruction and grade transitioning.
They also were asked to put provisions in common terms that parents and others could understand.

A Lake Placid man faces multiple counts in connection with a fatal traffic crash in Desoto County. William Wesley Roberts has been charged with Driving Under the Influence in an accident involving death.
The 60-year-old Lake Placid man reportedly was on State Road 72 in Arcadia and made a left turn in his pickup, pulling into the path of an oncoming motorcycle. 23-year-old Justin Daniel Peachy hit the side of the F-150 and was killed.
Neither Roberts nor an occupant in the truck were injured.

The owner of a Sebring-based home care agency is facing multiple felony charges after he was caught altering checks from a deceased client.
The owner of Precious Angels Home Care of Sebring, Arcadia and Punta Gorda, Heof Andrea Culli, has been arrested on 26 felony counts, including multiple counts of fraud, forgery and theft.
The 38-year-old Ormond Beach man reportedly admitted to detectives that he had changed the amounts on four checks from his client, upping the amounts by a total of $26,000.
Authorities say Culli claimed he was doing it to get money he was owed for services. He currently is free on $38,000 bond.
