Highlands County Sheriff’s officials are thanking the FBI and the Wilson Police Department in North Carolina for picking up a fugitive. Daniel Luis Galarza was charged with attempted first degree murder in connection with a December robbery and shooting in Avon Park.
He is being held in the Wilson County jail awaiting extradition.
During that incident, one person was hit in the collarbone and a second was grazed by a bullet. It remains unclear as to what sparked the shooting.
A second suspect, 16-year-old Sebastian Martinez still is being sought.

Playground equipment at Sebring’s Max Long Complex soon will be coming out. City officials say that action will begin in the next several days. The move is in preparation for the installation of a new set of slides, climbing equipment and swings.
At least part of the playground will be covered, to help shield youngsters from the elements. The original equipment was done in a project aided by work from local Kiwanians.
City officials already have budgeted $80,000 for the work. the county is slated to provide the other half of the funding.

Action will begin today at the Sebring International Raceway as the North American series of Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli takes to the track. It’s the first time for this group of the prancing horse to return to the historic circuit this decade.
Although the paddock will not be open to the public, the midway area will be open, with viewing available from the esses all the way down to Seven – The Sebring Raceway Hotel.
Track officials say the drive-over bridge will be open to the flagpole area, and camping will be permitted for those who wish.

A 13-year-old girl was struck and killed in Polk County, by an Argentinian woman who has no drivers license. Polk County Sheriff’s officials say Mariana Perez Borroto was riding her bike to Lake Marion Creek Middle School in Kissimmee when 25-year-old Micaela Coronel hit the girl with a minivan.
Officials say Coronel has no Florida driver license. She has been charged with operating a motor vehicle without a valid license causing death.
Coronel was being held without bond.
