Another successful kickoff for the local holiday season last night, as the Avon Park Christmas Parade went off without a hitch. Local officials first joined Heartland Helping Hands in lighting up the newly refurbished Gazebo on the Historic Mile Long Mall, with the parade following the traditional route down Main Street.
The next processional will be in Sebring. That will be this coming Friday evening. Authorities there lit the Carousel of Lights on the Circle this past weekend.

The next step in moving the Florida Medal of Honor Park will occur this afternoon as offials hold groundbreaking ceremonies at the site of the former Girl Scout House in downtown Sebring.
The park, which commemorates Florida Medal of Honor recipients, is being re-located from it’s current site on George Blvd. near the Highlands County Health Department.
A quarter million-dollar grant has been obtained to help with the construction of the complex, which also will be used as an education facility.
They will take their first shovels-full of earth at 2:00 this afternoon on the grounds of the Highlands County Government Center.

Highlands county’s contracted hauler is winding up the first pass and starting the final push through the county to pick up debris from Hurricane Ian.
To date they have collected more than 408-thousand cubic yards of vegetative debris. Of that, more than 15-thousand has been ground into mulch.
Residents are reminded to make separate piles for vegetative debris, construction materials and furniture or household goods.
Mixed piles have not, and will not, be collected.

Cars have arrived and are starting to be loaded in at the Sebring International Raceway for this year’s Alan Jay Pistons & Props event. Staged by Historic Sports Car Racing, the Classic 12 Hour has hundreds of vintage and historic competitors signed on to run sprint races – as well as the BRM Endurance Challenge, The Stoner Car Care Global GT Race, and the Classic RS Cup.
Test and tune sessions will begin for all classes starting tomorrow morning.
