Highlands County voters will cast ballots in a new congressional district this election cycle. The county has been moved from Congressional District 18 to District 9 under Florida’s new redistricting map, meaning Congressman Scott Franklin will no longer represent Highlands County or appear on the Aug. 18 primary ballot. The change does not affect races for governor, county offices, municipal offices, or judges.
The 5th Annual Children’s Business Fair is coming to Sebring on Sunday, October 4th. Hosted by the Children’s Museum of the Highlands, the event gives young entrepreneurs a chance to create a business, showcase their products or services, and sell to customers. Kids can apply for a booth, and shoppers can RSVP through childrensbusinessfair.org. The event runs from noon to 4 p.m. at 219 North Ridgewood Drive.
The Florida Medal of Honor Memorial is inviting the community to its 2nd Annual Gala on Thursday, October 22nd, at Island View at Sun ‘N Lake in Sebring. The evening will support the Memorial’s mission of honoring Florida’s Medal of Honor recipients through education, leadership, and community outreach programs. Gas up the boat and get your dive flags ready, the 48-hour lobster mini-season begins just after midnight Wednesday. There’s a six lobster limit per person in Monroe County and Biscayne National Park and 12 per person for rest of the state. Florida Fish and Wildlife officials stress the crustaceans must remain whole until getting back to shore. Divers must also have both a recreational saltwater fishing license and a lobster permit.
