A medical implant has helped authorities identify a man whose remains were found near State Road 70 in Highlands County. The remains discovered July seventh have been identified as 49-year-old Lazaro Alonso, who was homeless and had family in Miami. Investigators say there is currently no evidence of foul play. Alonso was identified by matching a medical plate in his leg with his medical records. The cause of death remains under investigation.
Highlands County commissioners have approved a 15-point-nine percent increase in the fire assessment for most property categories, funding a two-year plan to expand Fire Rescue services. The plan includes completing a new station in Spring Lake, beginning construction on a Lake Placid station, and additional staffing to bring emergency services closer to residents and improve response times.
Highlands County commissioners have also approved a 10-year residential solid waste agreement with Florida Waste Solutions, beginning October first. Residents will continue receiving weekly garbage collection and alternating-week yard and bulk waste pickup, with at least 8,500 garbage carts replaced each year. The agreement also includes 28 new collection trucks. Commissioners will consider the 2026-27 residential solid waste assessment at their August 18th meeting.
The Hardee County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help locating 58-year-old Cecil Hodge, a missing endangered adult last known to be camping near the Peace River between East County Line Road and Lake Branch Road in Bowling Green. Hodge is described as five-foot-seven, about 160 pounds, with brown hair, brown eyes, and a scar on his abdomen. Deputies say he was last contacted by law enforcement on June 12 and is known to travel into Bowling Green for supplies. Anyone with information is urged to call 863-773-4144.
