Sun ’n Lake residents will be watching Tuesday’s Highlands County Commission meeting, where commissioners will hold a public hearing on proposed changes to the improvement district’s elections and oversight. The ordinance would allow all registered voters—not just property owners—to vote for the five-member board. It would also increase county oversight of elections, audits, purchasing and finances. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday, September 1st, at the Government Center. Commissioners will also consider funding for improvements to the Hammock Road multi-use path.
The first-ever Garden Week is coming to Highlands County September 8th through 13th. The six-day event will feature garden and nature-based activities across Avon Park, Lake Placid and Sebring, including birding, farm tours, art workshops, local shopping and special food offerings. Classic Caladiums will also host its annual open house September 11th and 12th. Some activities are free, while others require registration or a fee.
The Who I Am Foundation in Avon Park has been named a 2026 Best of Florida Regional award recipient for charitable organizations. The nonprofit was one of 12 organizations recognized statewide. Founded in 2020, the foundation provides free communication and life-story kits to people with disabilities, medical conditions, memory loss and children entering foster care.
A 24-year-old Winter Haven man is facing six counts of attempted first-degree murder after police say he opened fire on a Lakeland home occupied by six people, including three children. Treveon Raggs was arrested Monday, ten days after the August 14th shooting. Two adults were seriously injured, while the children were not hurt. Raggs is also facing several additional charges and is being held in the Polk County Jail without bond.
