The Sebring chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association is asking for community support after its former treasurer, Thomas Justin Smith, allegedly stole more than 65-thousand dollars from the organization. Smith was arrested August first and faces three felony charges. The chapter says the loss effectively left it starting over financially, but volunteers and local partners are helping keep programs going, including Young Eagles, aviation education and scholarships.
Downtown Sebring is getting a new art event. Race to Downtown will host its first ArtWalk Thursday, September 10th, from 5 to 9 p.m. Local artists will display paintings, photography, sculpture, woodwork and more at participating downtown businesses. The free event is designed to bring people downtown to enjoy local art, businesses and the community.
The Military Sea Services Museum will host a public roundtable discussion marking 25 years since the September 11th attacks. The event begins at 1 p.m., on September 11th, in the museum’s Flag Room and will focus on attendees’ memories and experiences from that day. The discussion will be moderated by curator Fred Carino. The museum is located at 1402 Roseland Avenue in Sebring and offers free admission.
A DUI arrest in Winter Haven took a wild turn after deputies say a 37-year-old Michigan man crashed into a mailbox, tried to run from deputies, and then got into a physical struggle with them. Jose Zavala allegedly threatened to kick out the windows of the patrol car on the way to jail, prompting deputies to secure his legs. He later refused a breath test and is facing multiple charges.
