The West Sebring Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony, honoring the 2,974 people who lost their lives in the attacks, including hundreds of first responders. The community is invited to gather and remember the sacrifices made and the lasting impact on first responders and their families. The ceremony is Saturday, September 12th at 8:45 a.m. at Station 10, 3517 Hammock Road in Sebring.
The Avon Park Depot and Baseball Museum will host “Rails, Roots and Recipes” Saturday, September 12th, as part of Highlands County Garden Week. Guests can tour the historic depot and enjoy a $10 sampler menu inside the dining car, followed at 1 p.m. by a floral demonstration and hands-on arrangement activity. Sebring International Raceway is kicking off celebrations for the 75th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring by honoring the 75 greatest drivers in the race’s history. A panel of 10 racing experts selected the drivers, whose careers at Sebring include 878 starts, 109 overall victories and 93 class wins. Fifteen drivers will be announced on the second Tuesday of each month, beginning September 15th through January, leading up to the 75th race on March 20th, 2027.
A horse at a private facility in Highlands County has tested positive for strangles, a contagious bacterial infection affecting horses. Eight other horses at the facility have been exposed, and the affected horse has been placed under official quarantine. The case is one of two recently confirmed in Florida, bringing the state’s total to 22 cases this year.
