Drivers in Sebring will need to find an alternate route around Ben Eastman Road. The northern section between Sebring Parkway and Panther Parkway is now closed for construction. Highlands County Engineering and Hickey Excavation are building a new paved roadway and sidewalk, with the project expected to continue through mid-December. A major apartment project in Sebring is taking another step forward. The first building permit has been issued for Central Park Apartments on Spinks Lane. The two-story building will feature 16 units, and Chapman Construction is expected to begin work soon. The overall project is planned to include 25 buildings, with site work already underway.
Sun ’N Lake residents will see changes to the way their improvement district elections are handled. The Highlands County Commission has unanimously approved new rules allowing residents who have lived in the district for at least six months to vote. Elections will move to November and be overseen by the county’s Supervisor of Elections. The district will also face new procurement and financial oversight requirements.
A DeSoto County traffic stop turned into a high-speed arrest Tuesday — and it’s all caught on video. Deputies say a gray Toyota Tundra reached 116 miles per hour, passed a patrol car and another vehicle in a no-passing zone, before eventually pulling over. Body-camera video shows the driver getting out and being arrested. He tells the deputy, “I wasn’t running from you. I didn’t see you.” The deputy responds, “You’re still a dangerous speeder.” And that speeding landed him in handcuffs under Florida’s “Super Speeder” law.
