A 39-year-old Sebring man is facing attempted murder and firearms charges following an August 24th shooting outside a Family Dollar on North Ridgewood Drive. Police say Terrance Eubanks fired a rifle at a man leaving the store, striking him in the leg. Investigators recovered about 14 rifle casings and say ammunition found at Eubanks’ residence matched the casings. Eubanks previously served 12 years in prison on attempted murder charges involving a firearm.
The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit says recent cases have resulted in five prison sentences, including a 15-year sentence for Fernando Garcia for attempted sexual battery of a child. Others received prison time for sexual battery, child abuse and violations of sexual-offender registration requirements. The unit also recently arrested seven people for registration violations and other offenses, including one person facing 22 registration violations.
Nighttime construction will close S.R. 17, or Main Street, at North Lake Avenue in Avon Park beginning Tuesday and continuing for about two weeks. Crews will work on traffic signals, with intermittent lane closures and delays expected. The median crossover will also be closed, and pedestrians should follow posted detours and use marked crosswalks.
