Hot on the heels of this year’s holiday season, Avon Park city council members will be talking about how to decorate the City of Charm for Christmas this year when they meet tonight in reguar session. A number of groups in the area have volunteered to help out, but want the city to purchase the lights and such.
According to reports, the city of Sebring pays in excess of $18,000 for the Christmas decorations and events on the Circle each year.
In other action, the council will look at health insuance benefits and recognize Avon Park Chief Andrew Marcy for his being named Firefighter of the year by American Legion Post #69.
Residents may soon be seeing a big white survey boat cruising Lake Jackson and Little Lake Jackson.
The SurvTech craft will be surveying those, as well as lakes Letta, Lotela and Eva.
Those lakes were chosen by the Southwest Florida Water Management District to collect data on the depth and flow of the water, and to establish guidance levels for the lakes.
There’s no word on when those figures will be available.
Highlands county firefighters had a couple of calls over the weekend. First, units from West Sebring were assisted by Florida Forest service crews in containing a brush fire off Blueberry Lane. The flames charred about an acre there.
Crews were called out yesterday afternoon to extinguish a house fire on West Josephine Road. The call came in around 2:00. Units from Desoto City, Lake Placid and Placid Lakes responded to the blaze.
Reportedly, the house was totally involved in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene.
No injuries were reported. Cause remains under investigation. The structure is said to be a total loss.
Three people were injured when a plane went down in a remote area of Lorida. In all, there were six occupants of the Quest Aircraft Kodiak 100, that ended up upside down in a field off Oneal Road.
According to reports, the flight was on its way from the Florida Keys when it went down. So far there’s no word why. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
At least one person had to be airlifted to a trauma center yesterday when the car they were in hit a utility pole in Sebring. Lakeview Drive was closed for a time while the pole was replaced.
