News Update for 1/27/20

Firefighters were busy in Avon Park last night. There was a structure fire in a mobile home on England Avenue in the City of Charm shortly after 7PM.
Apparently it started in a back bedroom and has been attributed to the air conditioning unit. A mobile home next door also sustained minor head damage as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
No damage estimate has yet been released. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Avon Park city council members will get together this evening in regular session. Tops on their agenda is to go over a list of potential city manager candidates. They will look at five suggested by a citizen’s selection committee plus a number of their own choosing. In other action, the council will look at a pending utilities contract with NuCor Steel and get an update about the deteriorating Brickell Building.
The council also will mull over what it will cost to replace Rick Helms as Finance officer and consider the possibility of hiring their own building official.

A couple of weekend traffic accidents in the area sent drivers to the hospital in critical condition. A 44-year-old Avon Park man was sent to Osceola Regional late Saturday night. Florida Highway Patrol Troopers say Anthony Darrow was riding his Harley Davidson on Highway 27 and hit the concrete along the median near Hal MacRae Boulevard. The bike flipped and he was thrown off.
Earlier Saturday, a driver was injured in a Hardee County crash. FHP officials say 37-year-old Shaun Casey of Bowling Green was hurt when a pickup turned in front of his car on State Road 17.
