News Update for 1/6/20

Officials of the Highlands County Tourism Development Council want to see if they can make this a sports destination. Reporteldy, they have hired “The Huddle-Up Group” to make an assessment of the county.
“HUG,” as they are known, say if the goal is to expand sports tourism in an area – they can help. HUG officials will audit the county’s current sports tourism efforts and look at methods tp make Highlands a destination for more sports tourism.

A couple of bad accidents during the pre-dawn hours here in Highlands County. Florida Highway Patrol officials are working a fatal crash. That one happened shortly after 4:AM on County Road 621 near the spillway in Lake Placid.
Troopers have not released any other information. Reportedly, that roadway currently is blocked.

About 4:30 this morning, there was a single vehicle rollover on Highway 27 just south of State Road 70. That one reportedly involved a pickup. The driver of the truck reportedly was transported to the hospital. Three dogs and a cat also were in the vehicle. They all have been taken to Highlands County Animal Services.

Lake Wales police are looking for information on a traffic accident where a pedestrian was killed. Preliminary reports indicate 22-year-old Regina Kelly was attempting to cross Highway 27 in the Crown Jewel of the Ridge when she was struck by a car.
Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene. Charges against the driver of the auto, Jill Smeal of Babson Park, are pending further investigation.

One Polk County man was killed and another was seriously injured in a Hardee County ATV accident over the weekend. Killed was 26-year-old Kevin Randall Hunt of Winter Haven. Walter Enriquez of Lake Wales was seriously injured in the mishap.
Florida Highway Patrol officials say they still are trying to figure out who was driving the Honda Pioneer when it went out of control, went airborne and overturned. Both men were ejected from the vehicle.
