News Update for 10/15/19

By a 4-1 vote, Highlands County commissioners this morning voted to overturn the recommendation of their planning and zoning board and change the county’s zoning and comprehensive plan, to allow for the construction of a Bernie Little Distribution facility just outside the Sebring city limits.
The plant is slated to go in on a 20-acre parcel of land just off the Scenic Highway. Commissioners heard a long string of citizens who both gave arguments in favor, and against the development.

The search for a city manager in Avon Park continues. At their meeting last night, council members learned that seven people already had applied for a citizens advisory committee that will help vette city manager candidates.
Although they will have no power in the selection process, Mayor Garrett Anderson said it would help involve interested residents in it. Citizen applications will be accepted for that board for another couple weeks.
City manager candidates have until November 15th to get their applications in to city hall.

Polk County Sheriff’s officials say it may be a while before a Frostproof murder suspect is returned to Florida. Taiwan Blandin, who was nabbed by police in Atlanta, is has been charged with some serious counts Georgia. They say he will have to go through the judicial process there, before he is returned here.
Blandin has been charged in Polk County on First degree murder, arson, armed kidnapping and battery counts among other things. Deputies believe he may have been involved in the September murder of Peggy Shiering at her home in Frostproof.

Polk County Sheriff’s officials say they have nabbed another murder suspect. Double homicide suspect Stanley Mossburg was taken into custody around 5:10 a.m. this morning,
He had been barricaded alone in a house on Avenue C NE in Winter Haven. Also knonw as “Woo Woo,” the 36-year-old man has a warrant for his arrest from Greene County, Tennessee, for first degree murder and is also a suspect in a double homicide in unincorporated Winter Haven.
He has been taken to the Polk County jail.
