News Update for 10/27/21

In-person balloting for the Avon Park municipal election continues to be palid, with the bulk of the ballots cast continuing to be mail-ins. So far fewer than 100 people have turned out at the Avon Park city council chambers, with 296 mail-ins received so far.
Elections officials say, due to Florida Senate Bill 90 – scrutiny of those ballots will be a lot more thorough this time around.
Early voting in the City of Charm runs through Saturday, with election day set for Tuesday, November 2nd.

Sebring city council members will gather this afternoon to discuss certain structures on the west side of Lake Jackson. Building Official Greg Griffin wants more information on regulations of buildings on the waterfront there,
Several property owners on the stretch between the Gate Station to the Scenic Highway have been issued “Stop Work” orders on such things as concrete/paver patios, benches and swing sets.
Over the years, Griffin said other structures have been permitted and property owners want council to make some determinations on the code.

Highlands County School officials had to kick their rumor control system into gear yesterday. Avon Park High reportedly was put into a lock-down as the result of a disruptive student in class.
The lock-down was shifted to a controlled campus while the incident was safely resolved. Rumor control fired up after district officials got calls that there was a rumor that a weapon had been involved.

There’s a new executive director at Habitat for Humanity, after Wendy Sue Kozma was suspended. Kozma was suspended after allegations came to light about Kozma at her former job as an elected assessor in the state of Missouri.
Now, officials of the group say they have tapped Blair Pakowski to take over the executive director’s post. Pakowski already has served in several leadership roles in the Highlands County Habitat organization.
She will officially become executive director on December 1st.
