It’s Veterans Day and there have been numerous events throughout the county. This morning there was a parade in Sebring and ceremonies on the steps of the Highlands County Courthouse.
This afternoon at 3:00 the American Legion will celebrate their centennial at their headquarters on Bell Street in Avon Park.
At 4:00 there will be a flag wave honoring veterans. That will run for 90 minutes and will be located at the intersection of Highway 27 & Bayview Street across from Aldi’s.
It’s the second Monday of the month, and usually that means an Avon Park city council session. However, due to the observance of Veteran’s Day, the council meeting has been pushed back to Wednesday night.
You may have noticed a lot of activity going on at the Highlands County Fairgrounds. Those are preparations for this year’s Ag-Venture program. That 3-Day event will kick-off tomorrow as bus-loads of area third graders descend on the fairgrounds to learn about agriculture.
Stations will range from beef and dairy to alligator farming, and from citrus and grapes to ornamental plants. Adults will be given a chance to see the set-up tomorrow evening beginning at 5:00, A fundraiser steak dinner also will be presented at that time.
Drivers on the Sebring Parkway’s traffic circle south of Avon Park have been viewing a sign about an Olive Cultivar Project. Officials at South Florida State College say it’s a research project being done in cooperation with the Hardee County Industrial Development Authority.
The 18-month program is part of an effort to determine if olives might be an alternative crop, which has been devastated by a succession of diseases over the past three decades. So far, the trees have not fruited. Officials say, that may be a while.
Sad news from a competition at the Sebring International Raceway. Track officials say a driver has passed away from a medical condition during the Second Annual Michelin Encore Challenge this past weekend.
Dr. Timothy George was racing the ANSA Motorsports P3 car when he had a medical incident. He was able to guide the car to the pits – where he was attended to by medical personnel. The 59-year old Austin, Texas driver was taken to the hospital where he later expired.
